LA Sheriff’s Department Has A Muslim Public Affairs Unit

LA Sheriff's Department Has A Muslim Public Affairs Unit
It's paid for with public funds.

Separation of mosque and state, anyone?

More about the LASD's Muslim Community Affairs Unit from TheUnitedWest.com, via a somewhat sloppily written piece on their site:

Steve Whitmore, LASD Senior Media Advisor, confirmed the Muslim Community Affairs Unit receives taxpayer funds approximating $128,400 per year for two full time Deputies. When this reporter asked Mr. Whitmore if any other , religions, had a LASD Community Affairs Unit and received equal taxpayer funds, Whitmore replied, "There are no other religious Community Affairs Units in the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department."

For the LASD to meet the Establishment Clause threshold for "government neutrality toward religion" Sheriff Baca would have two options. First, Sheriff Baca would have to establish and manage Community Affairs Units with two Deputies and a $128,400 budget, for each recognized religion under his jurisdiction. The second option would be to dismantle the Muslim Community Affairs Unit in accordance with the Establishment Clause.

...The MCAU has another function, "The unit also trains department members about Islam and Muslims, touching on issues such as religious beliefs and customs. Academy recruits also receive a two-hour class on Muslim cultures and background as part of the cultural awareness training program." A program tasked with teaching Shariah Compliant Islamic values to incoming police recruits, while excluding the values of every other religion in Los Angeles County.

...A 2008 Pew Research Center survey reveals the citizens of California are 42% various Christian denominations, 31% Roman Catholic Christians, 2% Jewish, 2% Latter Day Saints, and 1% Muslim. The rest of the citizens are either non religious or of other minority faiths.

"According to the latest hate crime report from the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, 88 percent of all religiously based hate crimes in 2009 were against Jews. Hate crimes that targeted Muslims (3 percent) ranked slightly above those directed at Scientologists (1 percent). In fact, the commission found that attacks against Christians (8 percent) outnumbered attacks against Muslims." It could be argued statistically, that if any religion needs a LA Sheriff's special religious Community Affairs Unit, it's the Jews and Christians not the Muslims.

Terry Sanderson states, "if there is one public service that absolutely must be secular it is the police force. There should be not one whisper of sectarianism in the force and all this talk of Muslim police officers must stop. They are police officers who are Muslim, but when they are at work they must be simply police officers full stop. They must serve the whole community without fear or favor. This goes also for police officers who are Christian, Hindu, Atheist or indifferent."

Religiously based hate crimes against Muslims may be rare compared to hate crimes against Jews, but I think a more important question, related to the propriety of a Muslim Community Affairs Unit, would be the number of religiously based hate crimes committed by Muslims. Police departments have special gang units, not because of crimes committed against gangs, but because of crimes committed by them. I doubt that that’s the reason for a MCAU, but someone should at least ask the question before taking a position on the issue.

True. Jews are fleeing several cities in Europe because of islamically inspired hate crimes. Malmo, Sweden comes to mind. They have also been using “decoy jews” in the Netherlands to try and get a handle on it.

“If there is one public service that absolutely must be secular it is the
police force. There should be not one whisper of sectarianism in the
force and all this talk of Muslim police officers must stop. ”

Seriously. Even cops in the Vatican are secular full stop.

A lawsuit should be brought against the LA Sheriff’s Department for violation of separation of Church and State.  Chief Baca should be arrested for the theft of public monies.  The Unit should be disbanded immediately.  There are many cultures and religions in California. There is no department for them. The hubris of Chief Baca and LASD is amazing. They should be reprimanded publicly for this violation of the Constitution.

You’re talking about Sheriff Baca yet your “investigator” keeps referring to this public affairs unit as an LAPD issue. Your credibility can suffer if you don’t know these are two distinct & separate law enforcement agencies (one is city police; one is county sheriff}.They are different and not interchangeable. The sheriff is an elected official; the chief of police in L.A. is appointed. The culture, uniforms, and daily activities are all separate, all different. If you demand accuracy from law enforcement, then demand accuracy from yourselves.

  • Alan Kornman

Could catch JB – I misspoke and did say LAPD rather than LASD at 10:39 in the tape. Thank you

We are well aware of the separate agency status of the LAPD and LASD.  However, earlier in the LASD Town Hall Meeting a question was asked by Tom Trento specifically addressing the Muslim Brotherhood.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJxc8K1jl24

LASD Sheriff Morsi submitted to LAPD Chief Michael Downing as the “superior” person in the room to answer the question, even though Downing was just in the audience as a spectator and not on dais with the “experts”.

The lines were blurred but by no means an excuse for my saying LAPD when I clearly meant LASD.

As a good critic JB – do you think the LASD should be sued for taking taxpayer dollars  representing Muslim interests over all other religions in LA County?  Frankly, should there even be a MCAU and does the LASD have a reason to be in the religion advocacy business?

Give me a break. If you were born in the US, are you an expert on the White Aryan Race or Christian Identity terrorists?  How about the JDL? Because you are jewish, you MUST be an expert there, huh?  Muslim terrorist are much like Catholic terrorist in Ireland or Christian terrorist in the US. They do not accurately represent the entire religion.
Just as law enforcement conducts community building operations in gang neighborhoods to turn the area against gang activity (at MILLIONS of dollars per year in Los Angeles), they are now building networks within the Muslim community (and it is a distinct community that is tightly knit) to help fight the criminals within that community.  If you eliminate the tolerance within a community for a criminal activity, the crime stops.

What needs to be investigated is how much money is being channeled to Sheriff Baca’s reelection fund from the Muslim community.  We already know he gives badges to “reserve deputies” from other ethnic groups and in return he receives campaign donations…he has been the most corrupt LASD Sheriff in history, and all the line personnel know that.

  • Alan Kornman

Retired LASD – Have not heard about the “reserve deputy” program you talk about.  Send more info to alan@theunitedwest.org

    • RetiredLASD

Most if not all law enforcement agencies have reserve officer programs. Baca, like the imprisoned Sheriff Corona from Orange County, uses his Reserve Deputy/Posse programs to obtain political contributions by giving contributors Reserve Deputy badges and quick, undeserved promotions.  He targets different ethnic groups such as the Armenians in Glendale, the Asians in Montebello/San Gabriel Valley, Hispanics in East LA/Commerce, etc., and in the name of Community Outreach he forms committees.  These committees always have wealthy individuals seeking favors from the Sheriff in exchange for contributions.  Check out his connections with the Commerce Casino.

SoCAL – Your terrorist analogies do not hold up to any serious scrutiny.  If you look honestly at the statistics on Shariah Islamic terrorism around the world you will see tens of thousands of attacks since 9/11 just as a starting point.  There is an Islamist Theocratic and Political justification for Jihad to exact a political end.
The  problem is that Muslim is not a race but a “religious and political” belief structure.      U.S. Taxpayer $$ going to a government “religious” based outreach program is problematic on many levels, mainly that pesky old “establishment clause.”   Your last sentence is naive and you should reevaluate.

    • Angelic1

I am pleased with what you are trying to do!  Good luck getting at Baca!  He is as dirty as the Orange County Sheriff, however he has not been caught or has a lot of money backing him.  Becareful not to get in his way, if he thinks you can ruin him, he will do everything he can to ruin you.  I know this personally.

  • Jhauptman

I’ve said it before…..I’ll say it again…….Baca is….and ….has been… making every effort to gain the attention  & endorsement of Obama for a Cabinet Post within the Administration.   This has been known to many insiders  & “outsiders” for years (at least two now)…..Seems to me that this sort of “PRESS” keeps his name infront of the “PREZ” don’t ya’all think ?

I believe that the West LA Pakistani Muslim  community is not as large as the Orange County Muslim community in Anaheim. Just wondering if Orange County has a similar unit?

  • Alan Kornman

According to our research the only publicly taxpayer funded “Muslim Community Affairs Unit” is the brainchild of Sheriff Baca chief of the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department.

  • Retired LASD

Sheriff Peter Pitchess must be absolutely spinning in his grave as Baca slowly drives this once great agency into the ground.  Baca, by the way, must mean ‘Idiot’ is some other language…

  • Njsutton1

Sheriff Pitchess was a leader, You would follow him anywhere. Sheriff Block was a manager, he could manage any situation that may come up. Sheriff Baca is a politician. Any people or person he can screw to his own benefit, he will.

If an investigation on the level that was done on Mike Carona was done on Baca, he would  probably be cellmates with Carona.  At the very least, he should be recalled for miss use of tax dollars.  Since he took office he has created a grand bureaucracy and much of it has nothing to do with law enforcement.

    Sorry, had a malfunction . . .

Pashville was or maybe still is a female jail facility that allowed women to have their children with them.  I don’t know if it is still in operation since I retired several years ago but this type of thing is the job for the Probation or Social Services.  This kind of thing takes valuable resources away from the core mission of law enforcement.

The whole thing stinks!  What’s so damn special about the muslims?  They hate us and have shown it over and over again. i.e. 9/11/01.  I’m glad I’ll be dead when they take over the USA.  That’s what will happen unless we stop them from intimadating us and letting them into this country.  We have every right not to do so.  Does any other country let in their enemies?  They don’t let us into theirs.  Ruth,  Calif.
